Frequently Asked Questions
We get asked quite a few questions about laser hair removal, but here are the most popular questions and answers!
Removed 100%? If someone guarantees 100% removal of a tattoo by laser, I would be very leery. Can MOST tattoos be removed fully – YES -however, there is no way to guarantee it. There are too many factors involved to make such a claim. We like to be up front so that you know ALL risks before making the decision to remove your tattoo.
ABSOLUTELY! We realize that you may love your tattoo, but just want a specific part of it removed. There are also several clients that have changed their tastes over time and just want to fade their tattoo enough to get it covered with a new one.
We all want instant results, but laser tattoo removal takes time and patience! Your body’s natural immune system rids your body of the ink once the laser breaks it into tiny fragments, which can take the body 6-8 weeks to do. In all the years doing tattoo removal, we have found that most tattoos are removed in 1 to 1 ½ years.
When we get a tattoo, we intend for it to be permanent. However, life happens, changes come in our life and sometimes we end up with “TATTOO REGRET”! Recent advances in laser technology have increased both the safety and effectiveness of Laser Tattoo Removal. Wichita Laser Clinic uses the a Q-Switched Nd:Yag Laser, the gold-standard in non-invasive laser tattoo removal for your unwanted ink. Using this latest technology, the laser delivers a high-powered, very short, pulsed beam of light at specific wavelengths (532nm and 1064nm). The laser emits a focused beam of light, which passes through the outer layer of the skin and is absorbed primarily by the tattoo ink. The light is converted into heat, which breaks the ink into tiny particles. The ink fragments are carried away by the body’s lymphatic system. The tattoo will then fade over a serious of treatments.
We will first go over your health history and evaluate your tattoo. Then we will go over the process, risks-benefits-options and answer any questions you may have. Lastly, we will establish price per treatment or package/payment options.
Most clients describe the discomfort level as equivalent to getting the tattoo applied (or slightly more painful). Some describe it as feeling like a rubber band snapping on the skin. It is a SUPER FAST procedure though, so you will not be sitting for long, as you did when getting the tattoo. Most procedures are just a few minutes, or slightly more for larger tattoos.
Many factors influence how many treatments will be needed for each individual such as:
• Age of the tattoo
• Pigment type
• Color of ink
• Skin color
• Location of tattoo
• How much water you drink
• Professional vs amateur tattoo
• Strength of your immune system
Although it is impossible to determine exactly how many treatments will be needed, the average is between 6-10 treatments. Some will take less, while others may take a few more, especially tattoos located on extremities of the body (wrists/hands/lower legs/feet).
To protect the skin, tattoo removal treatments are spaced 6-8 weeks apart for best results and will generally require multiple treatments. Many clinics space treatments only 4 weeks apart. This may mean more income for them, but does not necessarily product faster results. It has been shown that 6-8 weeks should be the standard time (or longer) in between treatments.
Contrary to popular belief, it is very rare to scar from getting a tattoo removed. A scar shouldn’t be left when using the correct type of laser. It is safe and effective on ALL skin types and has been successful in treating almost all colors. Tattooing itself may scar or change skin texture, an effect often hidden by the dyes. If laser removal uncovers skin changes, you may be left with what looks like a “ghost” of your old tattoo, although rare. Of course, it is important to follow aftercare recommendations to ensure a fast and healthy healing process.
